35882699_MHaving an autoimmune disease is growing more and more common. Still, these diseases probably don’t always make it into the evening news in your area. Chances are that since you’ve been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, you’ve taken a great interest in the medical, technological and social developments surrounding these diseases. But have you read all the latest articles?

In this blog, we’ll break down some of the most interesting articles out there right now about having an autoimmune disease. These articles may be interesting to some of you. If nothing else, we hope these help take your mind off any struggles you may be having right now.

These are some of the most interesting articles in the news right now that may be relevant to you.

1. Are dairy products causing some to develop an autoimmune disease?
This article from IFLScience discusses a recent study from the University of Central Florida that looked at how dairy products may have an effect on rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers have suggested that there is a form of bacteria found in dairy products that may cause RA in some people.

Of course, researchers do mention that this form of bacteria will only affect those who are already genetically predisposed to having RA. There is a specific gene within those who are predisposed to this disease that is also affected by dairy products, which is why the researchers are looking at this connection.

2. Testosterone may be the reason why more women have an autoimmune disease.
A recent article from ARS Technica looks at how testosterone may be the reason that women are more likely to have an autoimmune disease than men. Since there are few genetic differences between men and women, many researchers have been led to believe that testosterone – a hormone found more in men than women – may be part of the reason.

The article highlights several studies that looked specifically at MS and how testosterone may be able to help those who suffer from the disease. It even highlights some drugs that are already on the market that use testosterone therapy to treat MS.

3. Pharmaceutical professionals are working on new drugs to help the immune system.
Former pharmaceutical executives from Biogen and Pfizer have joined together to work on a new class of drugs that will help treat autoimmune diseases. This Cambridge startup has already reached funding of $58 million.

This startup is supposed to work on meds that will work with the immune system, instead of against it. So many drugs we rely on for our chronic diseases can weaken the immune system to the point where we are susceptible to other diseases. These researchers hope to be able to find and sell meds that will not have this kind of effect on its users.

4. An article that speaks for those who suffer from an autoimmune disease.

There aren’t always a lot of articles in the news that focus on those of us who have these diseases. This article written by Cherese Jackson in the Liberty Voice discusses what those with chronic diseases want you to know.

The article highlights a lot of things those of us with these diseases try to tell our loved ones. Its purpose is to bring awareness to these diseases. Arguably, these six topics won’t be completely truthful for all of us dealing with these diseases. However, you may find them helpful to share with your family and friends.
